HOUSTON—A distracted driver is being blamed for a major accident in north Harris County.

The accident happened early Monday morning at the intersection of FM 1960 and Imperial Valley.

Deputies say a man driving an SUV admitted he was on his cell phone when he slammed into a car stopped at a red light.

“He (the SUV driver) was on his cell phone and he looked back to change lanes. When he looked forward he hit the car in front of him,” said Harris County Sherriff’s Deputy C.J. Meaux.

Six family members inside that car were hurt. Among the inured was a 19-year-old who is in critical condition.

The man driving the SUV was not hurt. Authorities say he is cooperating with investigators.

Harris County sheriff’s deputies did a skid test and believe the man driving the SUV was going about 50 miles an hour prior to the accident.
